Hair Grass Genus Details

section divider
Hair grass is a superb ornamental valued for its dark green foliage and cloudlike quality of its inflorescences, which form billowing masses of the finest, hairlike texture. This variable species has a wide native distribution in temperate zones, including Europe, Asia, and North America. A cool season grower, it prefers moist habitats, such as shores, meadows, bogs and damp woodlands, often in heavy soils. Hair grass is strictly clump-forming and tufted, with a basal tuft of narrow, dark green leaves, 1-2' tall. Flower panicles are produced in late June or July, emerging in various shades of green to gold, drying to light golden straw color and lasting through the winter unless broken down by snow.
